Can you believe that December is here already? I sure can't! Today is my last day at work until the end of my maternity leave - January 19. The students will be in good hands with my sub, Miss O'Neill.
This week in math students will be finishing up a TIMS lab they started on Monday learning about velocity. They will finish the unit this week and take the test some time next week. Look for notice of this to come home soon!
In writing this week students have a spelling list they should be studying and the regular tests will resume on Fridays. They will also begin a new writing piece that they will choose from a writing prompt/stamina activity that we did a few weeks ago.
Don't forget MAPS test will be tomorrow, Tuesday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 8. Please make sure your student gets a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast.
Check back on the blog this week for pictures of the new baby! I will miss you all!

Thank You!
Dear Families,
Thank you so much for the nice surprise shower today! You are so thoughtful. I really appreciate the gift card and other gifts that were given today for the baby (and Olive so she wouldn't be jealous!). I really couldn't ask for a better class and supportive parents. I will miss everyone while I am on maternity leave and I appreciate that you have all acknowledged what an important time this is for my family. Happy Holidays!

Week of November 23-24
The holidays are upon us! I hope you are all ready for turkey and shopping. I know I am...but first we have to get through two days of school!
This week in math we are learning about common denominators of fractions. Mr. Koerner will begin sitting in on class to see where we are in the curriculum and what procedures I use for homework, instruction, review, etc. He will take over next week when I leave.
This week in writing students will finish their persuasive dialogue writing pieces and share those with the class on Tuesday. This means that papers should be completed when they come to school on Tuesday. Due to the short week there will be no spelling list this week.
Remember that next week students will be taking their MAPS test in Reading Tuesday morning and their MAPS math test the following Tuesday morning. I will go over students previous scores and set goals with them this week. Please make sure your students get a good breakfast and encouraging word on their way out the door on these days.
I plan to return to school Monday, Nov. 30th and then be on maternity leave Tuesday, Dec 1 through January 19. I will try to keep my blog updated while I am away and send out email reminders when I do. If you are not receiving these email reminders please let me know and I will add you to the list.
I promised the students I would post pictures of the new baby on the blog, so look for those Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

Week of November 16-20
Parents, thank you for such a great turn out at conferences. It is always nice to visit with you!
This week is flying by! I'm sorry it has taken me until Wednesday to get blogging!
We had a great time on our field trip on Tuesday, but I am sure you already heard all about that! Thanks to those who volunteered to help out. You really made our day go smoothly!
In math this week we are again working with fractions as we begin Unit 5. Students continue to practice drawing fractions with dot paper and compare them with fractions made with pattern blocks.
In writing this week we are beginning a new writing piece on persuasive dialogue. The students are choosing two topics to argue. They are pre-writing with a list of pros and cons for each side and then writing a dialogue between two people as they debate the issue. This will not only teach them persuasive writing, but it will also help them practice writing with quotations. I would really like for these to be finished by Tuesday of next week. Please take them time to help your students with editing/revising.
If your child is going to be gone next week please let me know ahead of time and I will do my best to get them work.

Week of November 9-13
Just a few quick thoughts for the week before I see on you Wednesday or Thursday . . .
Don't forget Parent-Teacher Conferences this Wednesday and Thursday. If you have forgotten your conference time call the office. If for some reason you find you are unable to attend please email me or call the office and let them know.
If you would like to volunteer for the KU Women's Field Trip I need to know by Wednesday so we can turn in our shirt orders. You have to have a t-shirt, this is your ticket into the game as a chaperon.
In math ...
Unit 4 tests were gone over today in class, but students will not be bringing them home. They will stay here until conferences.
This week we began another unit on fractions. We are working hands on using geoboards and dot paper to draw and design fractions. Students were given their new vocabulary words on Monday.
In writing . . .
This week students have been working on writing stamina. They were given several prompts and 5 minutes of time to write as much as possible. We will then take these prompts and develop stories.
There is no spelling this week!
Don't forget about the upcoming field trip on Tuesday next week!

Week of November 2-6
No School on Friday for Students - Teachers are Recording and Reporting!
Math ...
There will be a math test on Wednesday covering Unit 4. This will be our last grade to go in the grade book before I figure final grades for the trimester. Please encourage your students to study their math vocabulary words and practice the division method that works best for them. If they are struggling with anything in particular have them come see me before school, during study hall, or make arrangements for them to stay after on Tuesday so I can work one-on-one with them.
Also, I am giving one more extra credit enrichment option. Please encourage your child to at least give it a try.
Writing ...
Due to the short week we will only cover spelling in writing this week. Notice that I have started listing the Unit spelling words on the blog. Now students have no excuse for not studying!
Don't forget to write your parent teacher conference time on your calendar for next week! I look forward to meeting and talking with you all.
Please keep watch of the Google calendar at the top of the page for upcoming events so that you can plan ahead.
Thanks to all those parents who helped make a great Halloween Party!
