This week we are celebrating Kansas Day, on Thursday, January 29.We have done several activities to get ready for this event.
Reading / Language Arts: This week students are working on research projects of famous Kansans. While researching they will learn how to takes notes, write a bibliography, use a variety of resources for research, organize their material, and make a PowerPoint presentation. The kids are very excited and having been doing a great job so far!
Math - My math class is getting ready to start Unit 8, which focuses on finding volume. We have also been going over items that students need to work on for state assessments.
Science - This week in science we will learn more about magnets and students will have an opportunity to make an electromagnet. They will also learn about insulators and conductors and we will review the scientific process as we conduct experiments on different materials determining if they are insulators or conductors.
Special this week: We will have a visiting local author on Kansas Day, Pam Grout. She has written several books, but she will be speaking on her two she wrote about Kansas "You Know You're in Kansas When . . ." and "Kansas Curiosities."
Monday's Homework - Study spelling for the test on Wednesday.

Tuesday's Homework - Today we continued working on research of our Famous Kansans. We spent most of the morning learning about PowerPoint and how to use the program. Students will spend tomorrow finishing there research and putting their slide shows together. The only homework for tonight is to study their spelling words.
Friday's Homework - We have been very busy this week working on our Famous Kansan PowerPoints. The students did a fabulous job and we presented those this morning. Each one was unique and had their own creative touch. Unfortunatly my math class did not have the best behavior today and made the choice to work on DPP problems instead of playing Battleship (to learn graphing coordinates). If they do not have their DPP problems finished that is homework this weekend. Hopefully next week they will make better choices in behavior!
We also learned about the scientific method today. Students are working on making a poster for the steps. The poster is due Monday.
Students also need to study their spelling words this weekend.

Week of January 19-23
What a week we have ahead! I apologize for falling behind on my posts last week. This week is going to be a busy one. We have a lot planned, as well as "extra events." Today (Tuesday) we are spending our morning focusing on the the inauguration. The students wrote this morning in their journals about the significance of the day and we will be watching President Obama take the oath of office and make his speech. Today we will also be visiting the library to check out books. Tomorrow I will be giving a formative reading assessment on the computer in preparation for state assessments.
Thursday will be a crazy day. First thing in the morning we will be participating in the Body Venture, body walk. Students will get the experience of walking through a replica of the human body. We will then be eating lunch in the classroom early. Students are welcome to bring their lunch that day, but they can also purchase their lunch in the cafeteria. Our class will load the bus at 11:30 to head for the Fair Grounds for Slice of Agriculture. At this field trip students will learn about the farm life as well as nutrition and Kansas resources. At the end of the trip students will enjoy a pizza snack. On Thursday we will also be taking a group class picture!
Reading/Language Arts - We will be writing about the inauguration, taking a formative reading assessment, and we will also begin working on a research project for a PowerPoint we will be doing on famous Kansans.
Math - This week my math class will be finishing up unit 7 on multiplication by multiply digits and will begin unit 8.
Science - We continue to work on our Electricity Unit!
Tuesday - Don't forget that book orders are due tomorrow! Study for spelling test.

Students also had their first Formative Reading Assessment in preparation for the State Assessments. Their is no homework tonight, however, students need to make sure and wear socks tomorrow for the Body Venture body walk. Thanks!
p.s. I will be sending home a writing piece that students did about their personal views/feelings about the inauguration yesterday. These writing are in sealed envelopes and are for you to put in a safe place so that students can open them in twenty years and relive history.

Week of Jan 12-16
My class is having a very full week. Our mornings are full of lessons on cause and effect, guided reading groups and stations. In math we are working on multiplication. We are continuing to learn how to use the all-partials method of multiplication. We are also focusing on how to use estimation in everyday life as well as trying to get everyone to pass their multiplication and division timed tests. Please keep working on these skills at home.
In science we are starting our unit on electricity and magnetism. Students will be learning how to light a light bulb, make a circuit, wire a circuit with a switch, and eventually wire their own house. When the houses are finished you will all be invited to our open house!
Other important events coming up ...
Friday, January 16th - Illustrator and author Brad Sneed will be visiting the fourth grade
Thursday, January 22nd - Students will tour Body Venture, as well as attend Slice of Agriculture field trip. Due to an early lunch time in order to leave for the field trip we will be eating lunch in the classroom. Students are encouraged to bring a lunch on this day, but are not required to, and can purchase a lunch in the lunchroom.
Reading State Assessments will be give March 2, 3, and 5th. Math State Assessments will be given the following week on the 10th, 11th, and 12th. Please make sure your kids are at school on these days.
Monday, March 9th - 4th grade will be going to the Lied Center to see a play.
Monday Homework - Students need to study spelling. My math class has page 205-206 #1-13.
Tuesday Homework - Students need to study for the spelling test which is tomorrow. There are two work science worksheets that also need to be completed - one is a vocabulary preview for the chapter, while the other is a cause and effect worksheet. This sheet will help reinforce the skills we are working on in reading groups. My math class also needs to do problems #13-18 on page 209. Have the students estimate the answer by choosing convenient numbers to use, and then also find the exact answer.

Week of Jan 5-9
Welcome back! I hope you all had a nice break and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. I sure did! My little Olive is getting so big. In the last two weeks she has started waving and saying bye and she is now pulling herself up to try and start walking. We are having so much fun!
Reading/Language Arts - In reading and language arts this week we are working on writing with adjectives. Today we watched "Unpack Your Adjectives" from School House Rocks and then worked on writing with good adjectives as we wrote journal entries about our break. This week we will also start back our Guided Reading groups and begin focusing on the text structure of cause and effect.
Spelling - Students will take a pre-test on Wednesday, learn the lesson, and get a new list. We are now on Unit16.Also, the school spelling bee is this Friday. Unfortunately none of the students from our homeroom will be competing, but we are proud of those who tried out.

Math - In my math class we went continue working on order of operations and divisibility rules. This week we will begin focusing on multiply digit multiplication. I am looking for parent volunteers who might be available next week during our math time to come in and help work on money and making change. This is one skill I want to make sure that students have down. If you are available during the day from 12:30-1:40 and would like to help please let me know.
Health - This week we are finishing up the unit on the Body and the Body Systems. Student are filling out a short little study guide as we finish each lesson and there will be an open book test on Friday.
Monday - Today we made a trip to the library for book check out. We also started working on writing using adjectives. Tonight students will bring home their journals and they are assigned to look over their entries with a parent to make sure they have used good adjectives to describe their vacation. Also, students are to bring home their health and finish the study guide part for lesson 2.
Tuesday - Today in health we really had a great discussion when studying the digestive system. There is no homework tonight, unless your students have homework from their math class. My math class has no homework. Have a nice evening!
Thursday - Today we started our guided reading groups and stations again. This round of guided reading groups is focused on students finding cause and effect relationships in expository reading. In my math class today I taught the all-partial method of multiplication. Here is a link to the Math Trailblazers glossary.
http://www.kendallhunt.com/uploads/2/MTB_Gr4_Glossary.pdf
The glossary will show an example of what the all-partial method looks like.
Homework tonight is to do math pp 199-200 #1-6. Students also need to take their Health books and study guides home and review them for the open book test tomorrow.
Friday - It has been a fantastic week back, but TGIF. My math class has pages 200-201 #10-18 for homework. The rest of my class needs to study their spelling over the weekend. Have a great weekend!
