Exciting News in 5th grade!
Mr. Dale Koerner, Sunflower Teacher of the Year, is out of retirement and back to work at Langston Hughes. Mr. Koerner has accepted the half-time teaching position offered by the district and will be assisting in teaching reading and math. Due to this change we will be modifying our weekly schedules some. All of our class rotations will be done on Monday - Thursday and Friday will be used for homeroom reading and math instruction as well as MARS groups, writing, spelling tests, book buddies, counselor lessons, etc. We are thrilled to have Mr. Koerner back at LHE and doing what he does best!

Zip Drives Needed

Dear Parents,
On back to school night we asked that students bring zip drives (flash drives) to save their computer documents on at school. This will not only ensure that your students work will be safe from other students "editing" but it will also allow your student to be able to bring their work home and finish it on your computer. These drives are not required and students will still be able to use the computers if they are not able to obtain one.
Next week we will have a lesson with Mrs. Fredrickson on the correct way to save using their zip drive. If you are planning to purchase one for your child please have it here by next Thursday, September 24.
Thanks so much!
Mrs. Minor

Math Test Update

Due to the need to spend more time on exponents and scientific notation the test will be post-poned until Tuesday. Students have an assignment for the weekend (page 63 #1-15). If you find at home that they are really struggling with these concepts please tell them to come see me before school, 8:20, and we will work one-on-one. Also, please make sure your students are studying their vocabulary words. Thanks!

Week of September 14-18

Greetings from 5th grade!

This week in math . . .
We will finish up Unit 2. As long as there are no major interruptions I plan on giving the Unit test on Friday. Students need to be practicing their vocabulary words at home in preparation for the test. This test will cover vocabulary; expanded, word, and standard form of writing numbers; fact families; and multiplication. This test will also include several word problems. We have been practicing both compact and all-partial method of multiplication. Students will have a choice as to which method works best for them.

This week in writing and spelling . . .
We continue working on the mechanics of writing, specifically writing with quotes. In spelling we also continue to have our tests on Wednesday. This week we are on Unit 4. I try to send home a list of spelling words by Friday. If your child can not find their list they are welcome to bring home their spelling book to practice or use the website www.eduplace.com/kids/sv

Other news . . .
* Thursday, September 17 is Constitution Day
* Friday, September 18 students will meet our new counselor Ms. Sandy Leichti.

Week of September 7-11

I hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend! I know I sure did.

This week we are taking our Math MAPS test. Once we have finished MAPs testing we will have a clearer picture as to where you student is, what kind of progress, or lack of, they made over the summer, and what we need to do to best support your child.

Tuesday we will be watching the Presidential speech in class. There will be no follow-up assignments or activities, however, we will take time to discuss the message.

In math ...
This week we will continue working on multiplication. We have started off slowly reviewing facts and fact families as well as multiplying numbers that end in zero. If you know this is something your child struggles with please start working on multiplication and division facts at home. Flash cards or fine, but computer games are often more motivational. I will try and get several linked to my blog soon.
I am very proud of all my students who tried the extra credit project. Thanks for your support at home!

In writing ...
I am in the middle of grading all those fantastic (and some fantastically long!) realistic fiction stories. Before starting another writing project we are working on some of the mechanics of writing, like quotes. Last week students also received a list of 300 ways to say "said." We have been trying out new words in class talking about what they mean and the kind of mental pictures they invoke. A great way to support these lessons who be to point out correct punctuation of quotes in books at home, as well as share with your child great words you find in what you are reading that the author used instead of "said."

Don't forget ...
* To turn in the blanket Lawrence area field trip permission form.
* Pictures are next Monday, September 14.

Football Challenge - Math Extra Credit

Dear Parents,
I wanted to let you know about an extra credit opportunity I provided to 5th graders this week. Using Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine they will be finding the mode, median, and mean number of wins for all the NFL teams for the last 10 years. I have provided students will a copy of graph from the magazine as well as a sheet to record their answers. This extra credit project is completely optional, however almost every student has chosen to participate. Due date on this project is Tuesday, September 8. Please encourage your students to complete the assignment - it really should be a lot of fun!
Thanks,
Mrs. Minor
