Week of September 28 - October 2

Exciting News in 5th grade!
Mr. Dale Koerner, Sunflower Teacher of the Year, is out of retirement and back to work at Langston Hughes. Mr. Koerner has accepted the half-time teaching position offered by the district and will be assisting in teaching reading and math. Due to this change we will be modifying our weekly schedules some. All of our class rotations will be done on Monday - Thursday and Friday will be used for homeroom reading and math instruction as well as MARS groups, writing, spelling tests, book buddies, counselor lessons, etc. We are thrilled to have Mr. Koerner back at LHE and doing what he does best!

This week in math . . .
We have started fractions! Students have started working with fraction blocks to make those hands-on connections. This week we will be learning about proper and improper fractions, mixed numbers, and equivalent fractions.

In writing this week ...
Students are finishing up their personification writing pieces this week. This will be our first typed writing project of the year and I hope we can share them with our book buddies next week. Students should also be studying for their spelling test on Wednesday.

Special Events
* On Tuesday afternoon Special Science instructors will be coming to the classrooms to provide a lesson to all 5th graders.
* On Friday the Fire Department will be here from 2:00-3:30 presenting to 5th graders to promote fire safety.
