What a great weekend! I hope you all were able to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine. We are looking forward to a full week of outdoor recess!
Reading - This week in reading we are working on discerning fact and opinion. As you read with your child at home it would be helpful to point out those differences. We will also be starting Guided Reading groups again. The focus for the next week will be on the text structure Problem and Solution.
Science - We continue to learn about electricity and will begin planning on wiring our houses. We will have an open house next week to show off our electric houses. I will let you know as soon as I have a date and time picked out - this all depends on how the students work!
Social Studies - We will begin getting ready for our next region, the Southeast, this week. Students will begin making their study folders and you will be able to start studying states and capitals at home.
Math - My math class is finishing unit 8 this week. This unit has focused on measurement, particularly volume. We will be jumping to unit 15 next and learning about patterns and input/output machines. This is an area my class seemed to struggle with after taking the a formative state assessment, so we will focus on this unit prior to our state tests.
Next week is Friendship Week for the school. Here are a list of days that Student Council has decided to celebrate.

Friday, Feb. 13- Valentine Party and distribute Friendly Valentines.
Tuesday's Homework - Students need to study spelling tonight. My math class will also have a test tomorrow. They should be studying the vocabulary list I gave them on Monday. Also, have your students start thinking about a simple experiment they would like to conduct to show me what they know about the Scientific Method. I will have more information for them tomorrow.
Wednesday - So much for a week of outdoor recess. Tomorrow should be better! After reviewing the classes experiments and seeing how they used the scientific method I decided that not everyone had a firm grasp on how to use the process. So, those students who scored an M (making progress) and T (targeted for growth)they are required to do an experiment at home using the scientific process. This does not need to be anything elaborate! We brainstormed some ideas today in class. If you have any questions just let me know. The experiments are due next Friday, February 13.
